In a world overrun by zombies, the surviving humans live on a few island outposts and make raids back on to the mainland for supplies.
The whole scenario (and many specific scenes) are an inversion of the world of Moby Dick, in which people went from the safety of land to the savagery they found at sea. Nantucket. The first couple scenes are on the island of Nantucket.
On board the ship Hyperion. Much of the book takes place on board the raiding ship the Hyperion.
Maryland's Eastern Shore. The first foray ashore is in a decaying town on the eastern shore of Maryland.
Jacob, the captain of the ship, mutilated in an attack when the zombies first rose; bitter, violent, unpredictable, at least partly mad.
Ridley, the main character, curious, inquisitive, thoughtful, observant. The story is told from his point of view.
